About Us
The Coastal Amateur Radio Society was formed in 1977 to further good amateur radio practices, training in amateur radio, and community service. CARS is registered as a Service Club with the Amateur Radio Relay League.
Since its formation, CARS has participated in many civic and community functions. They include, radio communications during the G-8 Summit at Sea Island, GA, the many hurricanes and storms in and around the state, and various charitable events such as the Tybee Marathon and MS Bike Rides held in and around Savannah.
Over the years, the club has offered licensing classes for the beginning level license, Technician, the intermediate license, General, and the advanced license, Extra. All of these classes are offered to the public free of charge. The only expense the students incur is the cost of the books and examination fee, which goes to the ARRL. Currently we offer a Technician and General Class in the spring and fall of the year. We offer one Extra class sometime during the year. All classes are being held at Memorial University Medical Center’s Hoskins Building Classrooms.
The club currently is affiliated with Chatham Emergency Management Agency to provide backup communications during times of emergency. The Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross, to provide communications with the 29 counties in South Georgia, which it is responsible for. We are available for Memorial University Medical Center,Candler Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Hospital to assist in their emergency communications needs. CARS also works with the SouthSide Fire Department to assist them with backup communications when needed.
